Eastern Creek Speedway blow

By Timothy Neal

The 2023-24 season at the Eastern Creek Speedway has been cancelled causing a massively negative impact on the NSW Speedway community.

No reason has been given for the tracks closure with rumours abound, with the Sprintcar Association of NSW posting on their Facebook page that:

“Unfortunately the season, which was due to begin on September 23 at Eastern Creek Speedway, has been cancelled. No further details have been provided.”

Works have been continuing on the problematic surface which has been rife with draining issues since its opening in 2021.

Event cancellations have been common at the track, with it’s initial budget of $40 million dollars having blown out substantially to twice that amount, with speculation that the total figure would exceed $100 million.

Drainage issues at the Eastern Creek Speedway have caused cancellations since it opened in 2021

The sport has received several setbacks of late, with this being a substantial blow to the NSW Speedway community, with Queensland’s Archerfield having gone by the wayside at the end of last season, as well as the cancellation of the World Series Sprintcars for 2023, as well as scheduling issues with the 2025 Grand Annual Classic.

Billed as a world class facility when it first opened, the design of the track itself is said to be a major drainage problem with its saucer like design and viewing areas that slope steeply down toward the track. Saturated areas would often occur that wouldn’t dry up, which caused many of the cancellations.
