Morris hunting for more Sprint Challenge success

Nash Morris porsche sydney

By Thomas Miles

After falling just short of a special round win on debut, Nash Morris is looking to go one better in his second crack at Porsche Sprint Challenge this weekend.

Morris’ return headlines the 24-car field that will tackle the “Paperclip” for the fourth round of the season, which follows just a fortnight after the most recent round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The son of Paul “The Dude” Morris took the field by storm by being the driver to beat in his first attempt at racing in the one-make category.

Morris won the first two races and was on track for a memorable round win until a spin in the final race proved costly.

Aron Shields was his main rival and picked up the pieces to steal round honours by winning the final race.

But Morris is determined to go one better this weekend, while Shields hopes to continue his consistency and break the Kiwi stranglehold at the top of the championship.

Marco Giltrap currently enjoys a dominant 105-point lead over Ronan Murphy, who has Zac Stichbury for company in third.

Shields is fourth and just four points away from Stichbury and Harrison Goodman completes the top five.

Junior driver Tom McLennan is a man on the move jumping from McElrea Racing to Earl Bamber Motorsport for the rest of the season.

One driver to watch closely at the QR will be young Grove driver Oscar Targett, who will enter his home race after a brilliant start to his national career, taking three podiums in his first six races with a worst finish of eighth.

Like Giltrap, the 17-year-old seems to have an innate and natural awareness on the track, and with the backing of the Grove Group, he’s an exciting talent for the future.

In the Pro Am side of things, Sam Shahin holds a comfortable 123 lead over Matt Slavin after six of the nine class wins this season, whilst it’s a logjam down to Brett Boulton in fifth, with Andrew Goldie and Richard Cowen holding third and fourth respectively.
