Price unveils Finke Trophy Truck livery

By Timothy Neal

Toby Price has arrived in the NT with a new design on his Red Bull Can-Am 2WD Trophy Truck ahead of this weekend’s Finke Desert Race.

Whilst the permit for this years event is still pending, the organisers are expected give the all-clear after all the safety measures are checked and ticked off – as per the usual procedure.

The current FIM World Rally-Raid Championship leader is a seven time Finke winner, with his last two coming in 2021-2022 in the cars category.

The legendary Aussie off-road racer has just returned from another attempt at the Baja 500, where he and Paul Weel saw their rotten run of luck continue in Mexico.

Price and Duncan will enter the 2023 Finke Desert Race with an indigenous themed design on their 2WD Trophy Truck

After qualifying in P23, Price and Kellon Walch had charged up to P7 before the Power Steering Box blew. After fixing that, they handed it over to Weel and Preston Schmid, where more troubles forced yet another retirement when a yoke in the rear of the truck broke.

But Price is back for another tilt at one the world’s most challenging and remote off-road races, taking to the desert in a Mitsubishi TSCO Trophy Truck 3600 cc alongside co-driver Jason Duncan in the Extreme 2WD class.

Price is aiming to win his eighth Finke Desert Race, and his third straight in the cars category

Price and Duncan will go in with an indigenous themed art design incorporated into his livery.

“Running with something deadly for this year’s Finke Desert Race!,” Price wrote on his socials.

“To be able to create something that tells the story of my history with the race and have it ride along with us is pretty cool.

“It’s a thank you to the Alice Community for all the times they have hosted this race… we all appreciate it.”

Weel will also be competing in the Extreme 2WD class, driving a Chev V8 745 cc truck with his regular Baja co-driver Preston Schmid by his side.

Weel and Price suffered more bad-luck in Mexico when they were forced to retire from the Baja 500 after numerous issues
