Brad Jones Racing’s Macauley Jones believes racing has improved in the Gen3 era of Supercars and was surprised by Brodie Kostecki’s bad sportsmanship flag at Wanneroo.

The Perth SuperSprint was the third round of the 2023 Supercars Championship, but first on a dedicated race track.

Racing was on full display at its finest on Saturday with championship contenders bumping each other for the win, but battles were less frequent on Sunday where the leaders charged into the distance enjoying clean air.

But further back in the pack there were still some passes made and Jones says making manoeuvres is much easier in the less aero dependent Gen3 cars.

“Yeah, I think you can follow cars better and closer,” the #96 Camaro driver said on the BJR Run Down Podcast.

“It (the Gen3 car) hangs on for longer than what (the Gen2 car) did.

“The less aero is helping you stay a bit closer. There’s no aero wash and no burning the front tyres off and then burning rears from that.

“I think the racing has been pretty exciting.”

Jones also had his say on the Shane van Gisbergen v Kostecki battle, stating he was also surprised by the bad sportsmanship flag waved at car #99 for blocking.

“Brodie and SVG having a battle like that was pretty epic,” Jones said.

“It was kind of cool to see, you’ve got different strategies playing out, especially at that place with the two tyre stuff and whether you’re holding on for longer or pit earlier and try and save them to the end.

“They’re racing bloody hard at the front. I was a bit surprised with the black and white flag for Brodie.

“It was sort of being given to him for blocking, but there were three or four laps to go in the race.

“You are allowed to block as long as you don’t move over in the braking zones, which I didn’t think he was really doing, he was blocking bloody hard. I

“I sort of thought it was unfair and then I thought it was pretty play on with them. It was pretty epic to watch actually.”

Jones heads to the Tasmania SuperSprint 21st in the championship.
