Jones adds Germany to European season debut

By Timothy Neal

Harri Jones has added the German Carrera Cup to his debut European season with Scherer Sport PHX, alongside his premier Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup seat.

The fast rising Queenslander has signed a deal with Phoenix Racing (Scherer Sport PHX) to compete the full German Porsche season, with the 23 year-old set to compete in a total of 16 race weekends across the European continent.

Having already signed with top Porsche team BWT Lechner Racing in the Porsche Supercup – an exclusive Formula 1 support act – Jones is now in a strong position to have an impressive debut season in Europe.

“For me, it’s a very big step to be racing in Europe now, It’s always been my dream since I started motorsport eight years ago,” Jones explained.

“This is the holy grail of motorsport and for me it’s a dream come true. My goal is to win the rookie classification and to continue to develop so that I can consistently fight at  the front.

“I don’t know any of the circuits yet, and I haven’t competed against any European drivers. That  will certainly be a challenge. But I have confidence in my abilities and the team. We will work very hard to  be at the front everywhere, as quickly as possible.”

The 2022 Carrera Cup Australia champion has already impressed for BWT in the middle east, collecting wins and podiums in the lead up to his European flavoured year.

The Aussie will join ten other rookies in his Maiden year in Deutschland, and one of his new team managers, Jean-Luc Tille, believes the addition of Jones is a strong get for the newly formed Scherer Sport PHX team.

“It’s cool to support a young driver from Australia with Harri. He has already shown in his home country that he can handle the Cup Porsche well,” Tille said.

“With him, we want to fight for the rookie title this year.”

The German season gets underway on April 27 at Spa Francorchamps, with Harri’s first race as part of the support for the prestigious FIA World Endurance Championship.

That will put the BWT Aussie in a strong position of form heading into the opening round of the Supercup, which starts at Imola on May 19-21.

“I feel better prepared than ever before, now it’s time to go show the Europeans what we’ve got!,” Jones concluded.
