Capo lands GT WCE drive with Grasser Racing

By Timothy Neal

Aussie racer Ricky Capo has landed a drive with Austrian team Grasser Racing in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, racing a brand new Lamborghini Huracan EVO2.

Capo will pilot the #58 Huracan EVO2 with Italian racer Fabrizio Crestani, and Brit Sam Neary for five endurance rounds, including the iconic 24 Hours of Spa.

The experiencd Victorian born racer raced in the German DTM trophy series in GT4 in 2022, taking out a podium in a luckless season with KUS Team Bernhard.

Having raced in everything abroad and international, from F4, F3 and S5000 machinery to GT’s and Prototypes, Capo last thrilled an Aussie crowd at the Bathurst International in 2022 with a dominating win in a PRAGA R1T in the Australian Prototype Series.

Capo is thrilled to be joining Grasser, with the first hit-out coming at Monza, a track where Capo has already experienced victory at the European Le Mans series.

“I’m so thrilled to be joining the Grasser Racing Team for the 2023 GT World Challenge Europe,” Capo told AUTO ACTION.

“Gottfried (Grasser) and the team are very experienced and made me feel right at home when I was in Europe for the official test at Paul Ricard.

“They’ve won just about everything they’ve competed in, so I’m very proud to come onboard. I’m mostly looking forward to the 24 Hours of Spa, but equally keen for more pre-season testing and getting comfortable in the brand new Lamborghini Huracan EVO2.

“The first round is at Monza which gives me a little bit of a confidence boost. I won the 4 Hours of Monza in the European Le Mans Series in 2017, so I’m hoping we can have the same level of success this time around.”

The other factor in Capo’s favour heading into the series, is that his role as a test driver for Praga in the R1T, with its Renault Sport Formula Turbocharged 2.0L engine, has helped him stay sharp in his transition to driving the new Huracan EVO2.

Equally, when he went to test for Grasser Racing in France at Paul Ricard to fight for the seat, the experience helped cement his performance.

“Driving the Praga R1T EVO in 2022 really helped me get up to speed in the GT3,” Capo explained further.

“The downforce is similar, and overall it felt like a very natural progression.”

The #58 team joins its sister #85 crew, made up of Clemens Schmid, Glenn van Berlo and Benjamin Hites in the brand new Italian made chargers.

The season starts at Monza on April 21-32 before the 1000 km of Circuit Paul Ricard in June, with the Spa 24 coming in late June/July. Late July sees the series heading to the Nurburgring, before the GTWCE Endurance campaign ends in Barcelona at the end of September.

Ricky Capo delivered a breakthrough win for Praga Cars at the Bathurst International in 2022.
