Waters carries familiar colours into Gen3 era

By Thomas Miles

Cameron Waters will retain his trademark Monster Energy colours for his first Supercars season driving a Gen3 Ford Mustang.

Waters’ will be driving the #6 Tickford Racing machine for the eighth straight year and is determined to chase a championship in 2023.

It will be easy to recognise the 28-year-old, who will be driving an all-black Mustang with a matte finish.

Waters has driven effectively the same livery since 2017, with a black base and sponsor stickers spread around the car.

The only time Waters raced with a slightly different design in his fill-time career was his rookie season of 2016 when the rear end of the car was grey.

Although car #6 carries familiar colours, Tickford’s team leader still loves the design on the new Gen3 Mustang.

“It feels like we’ve been talking about Gen3 forever, so it’s absolutely awesome to finally see the new Monster Mustang in the flesh,” Waters said.

“It looks tough and sounds even better, if it races half as good as it looks we’ll be winning a lot of races, so I can’t wait to get it out on the track.”

Waters emerged as Shane van Gisbergen’s top challenger last year, with thrilling duels at Winton and Pukekohe that will live long in the memory.

After collecting three wins and a career best 14 podiums, Waters enjoyed a strong 2022 and he is determined to carry the momentum to launch a championship assault after finishing second best in two of the last three years.

But with Gen3 bringing in completely new cars the category and many unknowns, he acknowledges the fight for wins and podiums will be wide open.

Cameron Waters has verb racing with an all-black Monster livery since 2017.

“It’s a huge year for the category, the new car could really shake things up,” Waters added.

“Everyone’s pretty much starting from scratch so there will be a lot to learn over the next few weeks in testing, and it’ll be anyone’s game when we get to Newcastle.

“I’m super pumped to get the season going, obviously the last couple of years we’ve been pretty strong, won a bunch of races and poles, but this year’s a great opportunity for us to take that next step.

“We’ve put in a ton of work to get to this point and will be working hard over the next few weeks preparing for Newcastle.

“No doubt we’re going to come out swinging and look to start our season with a big result.”

Waters and the rest of the Supercars field will be in action at Sydney Motorsport Park this Wednesday before the Newcastle 500 on March 10-12.
