James McFadden wins Kings Challenge tune up

By Timothy Neal

James McFadden took out the Kings Challenge at the Borderline Speedway in Mount Gambier ahead of this weekend’s Grand Annual Classic.

After taking P3 at Avalon behind Ian Madsen and Jamie Veal at the Presidents Cup, the World of Outlaws star beat in form Tasmanian Jock Goodyer to the chequered flag by 1.525s.

Goodyer started on pole for the tune up, but McFadden jumped him off the line from the outside to lead all the way home, with Goodyer sticking to the tail of the winner who was ominously faultless.

That makes it back-to-back Kings Challenge victories for McFadden, who will be looking to go one better in the Classic on Sunday after taking out P2 behind Lachlan McHugh in 2022, with the American bound Queenslander also in strong form heading into the weekend.

Veal continued his consistent summer (overall P2 in the SA/VIC Speedweek) with a P3 in front of Brock Hallett and Steven Lines.

America’s Sheldon Haudenschild managed a P6 for his Grand Annual Classic tune up, but was generally off the pace in the 30 lap hit-out, +10.245 of the quick McFadden, with Tyler Courtney also coming in at P18 (+12.059).

The crowd trends also continued for the Summer, as all across the country the Stands are being filled, with the Grand Annual Classic already a sell out, as was last night’s Kings Challenge, with what was the biggest ever crowd seen at the Speedway.

Tickets for the Friday and Saturday nights are still available, with Sunday hitting its capacity as of yesterday.

All the focus now goes into the weekend for the some 120 racers entered, with a strong list of American internationals such as Sweet, Haudenschild, Courtney, Eliason, Macedo and Reutzel, set to take on the local stars in the $50,000 dollar race.
