Arrows F1 Megatron heads for Adelaide Streets

By Timothy Neal

The Adelaide Motorsport Festival will add a third Formula 1 car to its schedule, with the Arrows Megatron used during the 1988 season to hit the track on March 25-26.

Driven by American Eddie Cheever during the ’88 F1 season, the A10B Megatron was designed by legendary Formula 1 technical director Ross Brawn, and was powered by a BMW turbocharged engine.

1988 was the last year of the turbocharged engines in F1, with Cheever managing a podium third in a year that Arrows claimed fifth in the constructors championship.

Cheever’s P3 at Monza occurred in a famous race, in which Ferrari claimed an historic one-two at its spiritual home just weeks following the passing of Enzo Ferrari.

The famous one-two followed the dominant McLaren-Honda pair of Artyon Senna and Alain Prost failing to finish, with Senna getting beeched on a kerb at the death, which allowed the Ferrari pair and Cheever to fill the Monza podium.

Cheever (R) took a podium third in the famous ‘Miracle of Monza’, with Michele Alboreto (L) and Gerhard Berger taking a ferrari one-two

The two other F1 cars to feature at the festival will be a pair of Brabham BT58’s that contested the 1989 season that were piloted by Stefano Modena and Martin Brundle.

More Formula 1 cars, sportscars, rally cars, touring cars and others attending the event will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Held on the Victoria Park section of the Adelaide Street Circuit, the action at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival is fast, furious and frequently changing, with a different category of vehicles on track every 10 to 15 minutes, including more open-wheelers headlined by classic Formula 1 cars, V8 Supercars alongside Heritage Touring Cars, a special Invitational category alongside Demonstration sessions, a Shootout for the fastest cars and more.
