Herne takes fourth straight S5000 victory

By Timothy Neal

Nathan Herne made it four S5000 victories on the run, as he charged away from Mawson following Cameron putting the second GRM into the wall.

The first of three 12 lap S5000 races got underway with TCR racer Aaron Cameron on pole over Nathan Herne, Cooper Webster and Joey Mawson.

The all GRM front row ended with Herne taking the first corner as the big ‘Wings and Slicks’ roar lit up the Adelaide streets, with Taman series challenger to Herne, Mawson, slipping into P3.

By lap 3 the order held, but Cameron sat within half a second of Herne, with former Italian F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella in behind Webster in P5, with Jordan Boys in P6.

The race had stayed clean by lap seven before Cameron put the #18 GRM into the wall, going too hot into the corner. He pulled behind a safety wall allowing the race to continue, with Herne then having a +3.543s split on Mawson who’d moved in P2.

Fisichella started to eat away at the gap to Webster, matching the lead pace with three laps remaining as he fought for a S5000 podium on his debut, with Webster also closing the gap to Mawson.

Mawson broke the lap record late (11 1:16.8155), but on the last lap he sat +2.412s behind Herne, as the top three held their positions with the young Victorian teenager, Webster, taking third in front of the three race Formula 1 winner.
