TCR World Tour taking shape

By Timothy Neal

The 2023 TCR World Tour has locked in the first dates of its inaugural season with a three leg European opener.

The TCR World Tour will also feature two dates in Australia with a round at Bathurst coinciding with the Bathurst International, and a yet to be confirmed date, most likely at the SMP.

The three opening races of the globes premier TCR event will all take place on Formula 1 circuits in Portugal, Belgium, and Hungary.

Portugal’s Portimao’s Autodromo do Algarve will host the opener on April 28-30, before heading to Spa-Francorchamps on May 26-28.

The third round will then take place at the Hungaroring in Budapest on June 16-18, with the President of the WSC, Marcello Lotti, saying the choice of F1 tracks was a calculated move.

“We are very pleased with this agreement with TCR Europe that rewards the long-standing cooperation between WSC and Paulo Ferreira (TCR Europe’s promoter),” Lotti stated.

“The choice of including three events of TCR Europe in the 2023 TCR World Tour was advised by both the appeal of the Formula 1 racetracks and the number of TCR cars based in Europe that will encourage the participation of drivers from overseas.

“In fact, we wish the TCR World Tour to make a significant impact on Touring Car competition at a global level and in this respect the addition of three iconic circuits like Algarve, Spa and Hungaroring to Bathurst that has been previously announced shows that we are going the right way.

“Interest in the TCR World Tour is huge from the drivers who aim to climb in the TCR World Ranking and qualify for the TCR World Final.”

Paulo Ferreira says he is proud that TCR Europe  is a part of the future growth of the popular global category

“We are extremely proud for this opportunity to be part of this new chapter of global Touring Car competition from its very start,” Ferreira said.

“The TCR World Tour is going to strengthen TCR racing even more by fostering relationships between the different series around the world. I am sure that TCR Europe and its stakeholders will benefit greatly from this cooperation.”

The inaugural TCR World Tour will feature nine legs all up, with the Australian races to take part at the end of its season before a yet to be announced venue will host a final, where the top 15 qualifiers across the season will battle it out for the World title.
