BIG BATHURST CRASH – IBRAHIM AND WHINCUP MERCEDES-AMG GT3 ENTRY WITHDRAWN

By Bruce Williams

Prince Abu Bakar has walked away from a massive crash at McPhillamy Park during early qualifying for the three-hour Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS event at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International.

Major damage as a result of the impact and roll over has seen the Triple Eight Race Engineering Mercedes-AMG GT3, which was to be shared by Prince Abu Bakar Ibrahim and Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup withdrawn from the weekends event.

Nearing the end of the first segment of qualifying, Ibrahim was at McPhillamy Park when he lost control and ran wide at the high-speed turn-in to the corner. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 lost little speed and skated across the sand trap into the tyre wall at high speed, which sent the Mercedes-AMG into a roll finishing on its roof.

Ibrahim was able extract himself from the Mercedes and was taken to the medical centre to be assessed.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering management confirmed the entry was severely damaged and cannot be repaired ahead of the Fanatec GT World Australia powered by AWS race tomorrow.

A stunning lap from local Brad Schumacher has ensured his Kelso Electrical Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II to be shared with Tim Slade will start from pole for the three-hour endurance event on Sunday of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International.
