Golding Spins Up Fresh Gold Coast Look

By Thomas Miles

James Golding will be racing with a fresh feel-good look on his Subway Holden Commodore at this weekend’s 2022 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

PremiAir Racing revealed the new beach themed livery at a special “sesh” session on the beaches of Surfers Paradise, where Golding played a starring role as not just the driver, but also DJ, spinning some disks to entertain the fans in attendance.

The livery itself will stand out on the streets of Surfers Paradise having been inspired by the circuit’s surroundings celebrating the series’ return to the venue after a three-year absence.

The car is littered with tributes such as floral objects, tropical flowers, roller coasters, city and surf items sprinkled around the sides and rear.

It is a similar design to the team’s Indigenous Round look, which were the colours Golding drove in his first race for the rookie squad at Townsville.

But aside from the Indigenous artwork being replaced by Gold Coast attractions, the other major change between the pair is the black bonnet, while it is a complete step away from the usual green and white livery that has been seen on the #31 for most of the season.

It is a new and bold style that has not been seen on the Supercars grid before and Golding cannot wait to drive it on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

“The new look of the #31 Subway PremiAir Racing Supercar is just amazing and I cannot wait to take to the streets of Surfers Paradise sporting this livery which celebrates both the Gold Coast and the Gold Coast 500,” he said.

“The car simply looks great with this new, really impactful design, and I could not be more proud to carry it into the event in less than a week’s time.

“Going by the reaction at today’s unveil, the new look is a hit with fans too.”

Golding said it was a thrill to swap the steering wheel for the turntable and combine both of his passions in the one-off event.

“Getting to bring my love of being a DJ together with my love of racing in such a beautiful setting was really energising and the perfect way to prepare for next week’s racing,” Golding said.

Since joining the grid in place of Garry Jacobson at Townsville, Golding has helped PremiAir Racing generate some serious momentum with a string of top 10 finishes at Sandown and Pukekohe.

He was also on track for a similarly strong result at the recent 2022 Bathurst 1000, but front-bar issues got in the way and relegated them to a fighting P12 finish.

Despite being thrown in the deep and completing one less round than Jacobson, Golding has already accumulated more points than his replacement and hopes to continue his good form with his new Gold Coast look.

The sister PremiAir Racing livery will retain its popular retro livery celebrating the 1995 Great Race podium of Wayne Gardner and Neil Crompton for the remainder of the season.

The 2022 Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 begins this Friday.
