MOSTERT CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY WITH A WIN

MOSTERT CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY WITH A WIN

By Timothy Neal

Chaz Mostert has won Race 9 of the Supercars Championship at Albert Park, finishing well clear of the field after championship leader Shane van Gisbergen’s tyre gave way in the closing stages.

Mostert crossed the line 5s before any other car in his Walkinshaw Andretti United machine, making it a birthday to remember for the new 30-year-old.

Despite the destruction of his tyre, van Gisbergen crowned himself the Larry Perkins Trophy winner with a 20th place finish in the final encounter.

The Shell V-Power Racing duo of Will Davison and Anton De Pasquale benefited from van Gisbergen’s misfortune to earn podium places, closing out a mixed weekend for the team in style.

Cameron Waters crossed the line in fifth but slid back to seventh after the application of a 5s penalty, Tim Slade gaining the spot for Blanchard Racing Team.

Brodie Kostecki was fifth in a return to form for Erebus, both its cars finishing in the top 10 as Will Brown was eighth.

Experienced campaigners Mark Winterbottom and Lee Holdsworth rounded out the top 10.

Scott Pye finished ahead of Broc Feeney, who was himself dealt a 5s penalty for a pitlane infringement.

In addition to van Gisbergen, four other cars acquired issues which saw them at the back of the field.

James Courtney crossed the line 22nd after he had a significant front left lock up in his Tickford Mustang which caused damage to his tyres. He also handed a 5s penalty for exceeding track limits.

The three drivers behind him were unclassified.

Thomas Randle’s car finished in pitlane with steering issues, while David Reynolds’ tilt at the Larry Perkins Trophy was also shot by a mechanical failure.

Jack Smith failed to get off the line in his Brad Jones Racing Commodore, going nowhere with the clutch to the floor.
