MOSTERT AND HOLDSWORTH COMPLETE DOMINANT BATHURST 1000 VICTORY

By Dan McCarthy

Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth took an emphatic victory in the 2021 Bathurst 1000, while the #888 machine of Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander struck late race heartbreak.

The win for Mostert is his second, while for Holdsworth it is his first and comes less than 12 months after losing his full-time drive at Tickford Racing.

Holdsworth was quick all race long and even drove an extra stint against the regular drivers allowing Mostert to be fresher when he jumped in the car with two stints to go.

Despite a mid-race tyre delamination and an extra stop the pair fought hard and surged back to the front to take a dominant victory.

The defending Bathurst 1000 winners Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander consistently pushed the #25 machine all race long, however in the final stint with under 10 laps to go suffered a right-front tyre delamination.

Van Gisbergen brought the #97 ZB Commodore home in 18th position.

As a result Cameron Waters and James Moffat inherited second position in the Tickford Racing Ford Mustang and crossed the line 3.739s behind his former teammate.

Despite clipping the wall at the grate when overtaking the limping van Gisbergen, Brodie Kostecki held onto finish on the podium, in his first attempt as a full-time driver.

He and David Russell had fast pace and stayed out of trouble to take their first Bathurst 1000 podiums.

In his last full-time drive Jamie Whincup and his co-driver Craig Lowndes finished in fourth ahead of Bryce Fullwood and Warren Luff.

Brad Jones Racing driver Nick Percat held off James Courtney’s attack in the closing stages to finish in sixth, the second BJR car of Todd Hazelwood and Dean Fiore was eighth.

In its debut Bathurst 1000 the Blanchard racing Team of Tim Slade and Tim Blanchard finished in ninth ahead of the Davison brother Will and Alex.

The 2017 ‘Great Race’ pairing David Reynolds and Luke Youlden came home in 11th from Macauley Jones and Chris Pither.

The second brother pairing Jake Kostecki and Kurt Kostecki came home in 13th after finding the wall late in the race, Garry Jacobson and Dylan O’Keeffe and Jack le Brocq and Zak Best rounded out the top 15.

Mark Winterbottom/Michael Caruso, Jack Smith/David Walland the #888 machine rounded out the cars on the lead lap.

Matt Campbell in Andre Heimgartner’s car and Jonathan Webb in Fabian Coulthards machine rounded out the top 10.

A late race puncture fired the Wildcard Triple Eight Race Engineering machine with Broc Feeney behind the wheel into the wall at the Grate, Anton de Pasquale also lost drive in the final segment and did not greet the chequered flag.
