2022 AUSTRALIAN TOP FUEL CHAMPIONSHIP CALENDAR ANNOUNCED

2022 Australian Top Fuel Championship announced

By Dan McCarthy

The 2022 Australian Top Fuel Championship calendar has been announced and will see the series visiting at least three states over six rounds.

The new national series includes two races in Victoria, two races in Sydney, a round in Western Australia and a yet to be confirmed location for the Grand Final however organisers are promising something special.

As previously announced, many of the biggest Drag Racing teams in the nation, including Jim Read Racing, Lamattina Top Fuel Racing, PremiAir Racing, and Rapisarda Autosport International have all committed to the new championship.

Series promoter Nathan Prendergast, from Ignition Productions, said is excited to see the championship visit so much of the nation.

“We promised the 2022 Championship will include six races across four states or territories, and there’ll be at least six Top Fuel cars racing at every round, that’s what we’ve delivered,” Prendergast said.

“How good is it for Victoria and WA to have Top Fuel racing back at their home tracks.”

The first round is scheduled for January 21-22 2022 at the Sydney Dragway before moving would, visiting Calder Park in Victoria two weeks later.

Round 3 sees the return to Western Australia and the Perth Motorplex on March 5-6, a return to Victoria at the Heathcote Park Raceway from April 9-10.

The penultimate round will occur at the Sydney Dragway from May 6-7 before the currently unscheduled final round.

Another of the series promotors Andy Lopez promises the final round announcement will be worth the wait, promising a festival style event.

“We’ve held back announcing the last round because it’s a bloody big show with a lot of moving parts,” Lopez explained. “But it’s worth the wait, and it’ll be a motorsport festival the likes of which we haven’t seen since the 1990s.

“We deliberately haven’t announced other brackets as yet. We wanted to get our dates out there so people could understand our plans.

“The Australian Nationals, Westernationals and Nitro Champs are established events with an existing program and we’re proud to be part of them.

“If your group wants to be part of top class racing, at an awesome festival, in front of big crowds at our championship opener in Sydney or Round 4 in Heathcote – we’d love to hear from you!”

All events will see qualifying take place on opening day with all racing on Day 2.

This sees the most Top Fuel cars racing throughout the event as possible.

The series will have a huge focus on fan engagement, giving spectators access to the teams, the drivers, the cars, as well as all the action in the pits.

More announcements are to come about specific event formats in coming weeks.
