TOWNSVILLE DOUBLE STILL PLANNED

By Dan McCarthy

It appears more likely that a Supercars Championship double-header will take place in Townsville, as discussions continue to take place around a second event at the Reid Park Street Circuit.

At this stage the championship is set to run just the sole round this weekend from July 9-11, however discussions are continuing with the Queensland government to get a second event over the line.

Auto Action understands that some Supercars outfits have been struggling to find accommodation due to the late notice of the planned event, however plans are still to proceed with the additional round.

As national travel is recovering from the latest outbreak, many people are taking a trip up north to Townsville for a much-needed holiday, but this making booking accommodation on short notice a real challenge for teams.

It is understood that if the second event goes ahead as planned it will effectively replace the recently re-postponed round at Winton Raceway.

AA believes that the event at Winton Raceway in country Victoria will fill the slot left vacant by the Australian Grand Prix in November.

The event at Winton was firstly postponed until July 31-August 1, but has been further delayed.

It is unknown at this stage what, if any support categories will race at the second Townsville event.

Sources have confirmed that Super2 will be taking place this weekend, with the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series, Australian Carrera Cup and Stadium Super Trucks also expected to compete, albeit with slightly reduced numbers.

Once the stint up in Townsville has been completed all teams will be able to return home as the North Queensland city is no longer classified as a COVID-19 hotspot.
