In excess of 260 entries will race at Phillip Island this weekend for the third round of the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships.

Continuing the strong fields, which contested the opening two rounds at Sandown and Winton, 12 categories will feature in a packed schedule.

A large field of 40-entries for Improved Production promises a battle of David vs Goliath. Rob Braune in his giant killing BMW E30 is well suited to the Phillip Island layout, but he will need to fight off a horde of the General’s finest led by multiple Victorian champion Damien Milano.

Also among the leading contenders is Paul Cruse driving a model similar to Braune’s BMW, a Nissan S13 Silvia will also be one to watch.

Braune isn’t alone in representing the best of Bavaria with support coming from Brad Blunt, Wayne Twist and Andrew Butcher, who carries good form to the Island.

Although many of the leading contenders in Excels are not competing this weekend, two of the category’s newcomers will renew their battle.

Hugo Simpson and Jarred Farrell have been impressive additions to the category.

However, regular frontrunners Adam Bywater, Marcus Fraser and TCR Australia driver Ben Bargwanna will keep the rookies honest in what is expected to be a spectacular round for the Korean pocket rockets.

Although a non-national round of Formula Ford, 24-entries split between Duratec and Kent classes. The latest driver to come out of the Blanchard family, Harrison will race a strong field including man in form Thomas Sargent, Winston Smith, Jordyn Sinni and third-generation driver Clay Richards.

A spectacular category around Phillip Island, Reef McCarthy is expected to be the leader in a close pack featuring Shane Purvis, Nic Kerr, Heath Collinson and Ash Quiddington.

More than 20 Porsche 944s will take to the track at the Island after being the subject of a recent AUTO ACTION The Cost of Racing article.

Perennial frontrunner Cameron Beller is under pressure as John Kennedy, James Westaway and Adam Brewer become strong challengers, while legend Richard Howe continues in the category he helped create.

Leading the charge in Sports Sedans is Dean Camm in his mighty Chev Corvette, but Geoff Taunton in the MARC II V8, supported by MARC I V8s for Stuart Eustice and Tony Groves.

Ben Schoots in the SIN will be hard to beat in Sports Cars, as reliability continues to improve. McLaren 570S GT4s, Porsche GT3 Cup Cars, Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracan GT3s, Ford and Lotus also feature throughout the field.

All these classes are solidly supported by 20 Saloon Cars, HQ Holdens, BMW E30s and the MG & Invited British Sports Cars.
