MOSTERT TCR FUTURE CONFIRMED

By Bruce Newton

Man of the moment Chaz Mostert has confirmed he will contest the remainder of the TCR Australia Series.

Mostert, who scored his first Supercars win since 2019 and his first-ever win for Walkinshaw Andretti United at Symmons Plains in Tasmania yesterday, leads the series for front-wheel-drive turbo-cars in his MPC Bostik Racing Audi RS 3.

After clean-sweeping the Easter TCR round at Bathurst, he sits on 344 points. Aaron Cameron (Team Valvoline GRM Peugeot 308) is second on 281 points and Mostert’s team-mate Luke King is third on 266 points.

Mostert has raced in each TCR round this year on a one-off basis, although both he and Melbourne Performance Centre had made it clear they hoped to make the arrangement permanent.

That has now happened, a happy Mostert confirmed.

“It hasn’t been announced yet but we were pretty happy with it after Bathurst and I believe I am going to complete the whole season, so I am pretty pumped about that.

“I’ve been told we are going to continue so you can release it first. You can have the scoop.”

Halfway into the 2021 series Mostert has finished on the podium in seven of the nine races so far, and won five of the last six races heading to the fourth round at Sydney Motorsport Park on May 1-2.

He is the only full-time Supercars driver to contest the series promoted by the rival Australian Racing Group.

Mostert is also set to continue in the ARG co-promoted Fanatec GT World Series for the balance of the year, driving with Tony Bates in an Audi R8 LMS Evo. They are currently fourth in points in the high-profile Pro-Am class.

However, Mostert will step out of the Audi at Tailem Bend at the end of May when the GT3 cars support the Supercars championship round.

Shane van Gisbergen will also focus on the Supercars at Tailem Bend, leaving Triple Eight to announce a new co-driver for Prince Jefri Ibrahim in the Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Yasser Shahin and Garth Tander lead the Pro-Am title chase ahead of Ibrahim in an Audi R8.
