The Australian Prototype Series (APS) has announced its 2021 calendar and will join the Supercars Championship at selected rounds this year.

APS released a four-round schedule which is highlighted by a round as a Supercars support category at Winton Motor Raceway in country Victoria.

The calendar contains two trips to Victoria and one each to New South Wales and South Australia.

APS begins its season at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships from May 1-2.

Four weeks later from May 29-30, the category will then join the Supercars Championship at Winton.

The category will return to support the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships final two rounds of the season.

A round at Sandown from September 17-19 in metropolitan Melbourne and followed by an event at The Bend Motorsport Park from October 15-17.

In coming weeks APS organisers are expecting to lock in a new Endurance Trophy event for 2021, which will take place at the conclusion of the series, with the location yet to be confirmed.

APS CEO Paul Trengove is looking forward to the year ahead following a tough 2020 for all motorsport competitors nationally.

“We cannot wait to go racing again in 2021 and are really excited with the variety and quality of events on our calendar this year,” Trengove explained.

“Most notably, joining the Repco Supercars Championship in Winton will give our category an extra boost and provide our growing competitor base with plenty of exposure and close racing.

“Likewise, as a regular category on the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships card, we’re really excited about the growing stature of these events and look forward to continuing to race alongside some of Australia’s best motorsport categories.”

Trengove highlighted that despite the challenges of COVID-19 the category has continued to grow.

This was shown in the OTR South Australian Sports Car Invitational Series which took place in the back half of 2020 and featured many new competitors.

“It was certainly a challenging off season, but there are some really positive signs for the Series, with four brand new Wolf Racing Cars on their way to Australia from Italy,” Trengove said.

“The investment in this new machinery by our competitors is a great vote of confidence in the Australian Prototype Series and we can’t wait to get racing.

“We’ve also got some amazing new talent coming through the field to complement that new machinery and provide plenty of excitement – it will really spice up the racing and provide a great spectacle for fans too.”
