The Supercars Championship has released a statement regarding the cancellation of the Adelaide 500, saying that it is always open to a return to the Adelaide Parklands Circuit.

Supercars said that it received communications from the South Australian Government that it no longer wished to run the event.

However, with such history behind the event and the venue, Supercars has claimed that it will forever be ready for a return should the government wish to back the Adelaide 500 once more.

In 2019 the Adelaide 500 was the most attended round of the Supercars Championship season, 254,000 flocked through the gates over the four days, whereas only 201,975 people attended the four-day Bathurst 1000 event.

The news last night brings a likely end to one of Australia’s most famous racetracks.

The Adelaide Street Circuit was first used in 1985 when it played host to an official round of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

Adelaide hosted the Australian Grand Prix at the venue for 11 years until 1995 before the GP moved to the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne.

From 1999 until now Supercars has run a round of its championship on the Victoria Park circuit, in February few people could have foreseen it would be the final running of the event.

The Supercars statement can be read below:

The South Australian Government has communicated its decision to no longer conduct the Adelaide 500.

Supercars has enjoyed racing at this event since 1999.

We regret that the South Australian Government has decided to cease holding this event.

Supercars is looking forward to providing our fans with an exciting 2021 Championship across Australia and New Zealand.

If, at any time in the future, the South Australian Government decides to recommence the Adelaide 500, Supercars would be delighted to be there.
