SHANE VAN GISBERGEN VICTORY IN DOUBT

By Auto Action

Last-gasp winner Shane van Gisbergen’s race 30 victory and Supercars championship chances are in doubt following a recommendation he be penalised for a breach of refuelling regulations.

But the penalty itself won’t be known until after a stewards hearing Sunday morning at the Newcastle 500.

At the centre of the controversy is the Red Bull ace’s third and final pit stop, in which it appeared his Holden Commodore was lowered to the ground before refuelling was completed.

Van Gisbergen went on to pass championship leader Scott McLaughlin’s out-of-fuel Ford Falcon with just two corners to go and close the points gap to just two points.

A breach of the rules has been confirmed by deputy race director Michael Masi and a penalty – as yet unspecified publicly – has been recommended.

Van Gisbergen’s team, Triple Eight Race Engineering, has refused to accept the penalty leading to the stewards hearing.

This is the latest in a string of pitlane controversies for Triple Eight. Van Gisbergen survived a protest from DJR Team Penske in the last championship event in New Zealand.
