It was an excellent debut from Prodrive Racing Australia Supercar driver Chaz Mostert on the tight streets of Macau as he matched his fifth position yesterday in today’s exciting feature race.

Mostert started position five, but was on in a podium place after the Mercedes of Raffaelle Marciello exited the race with overheating issues and the Schnitzer BMW M6 GT3 of Brazilian Augusto Farfus pitted for dislodged bodywork.

However, the charging Maro Engel overhauled Mostert’s FIST Team AAI BMW M6 GT3 around the outside of Lisboa straight after a Safety Car period to collect the stricken Audi R8 GT3 LMS of Lucas Di Grassi.

Another Safety Car to aid in the recovery of Darryl O’Young’s spun Porsche 991 GT3R allowed Farfus to close the gap and he was able to pass Mostert’s teammate, double DTM champion Marco Wittmann and the Aussie in a matter of corners after both made mistakes. Mostert was lucky to just tag the wall after sliding wide just after the Solitude Esses. From there, Mostert was able to hold onto fifth and was closing on the vastly experienced Farfus.

Ahead, fellow debutant Robin Frijns was most impressive in pursuit of victory against ‘Mr Macau’ Edoardo Mortaro. Despite the ever-present pressure of Engel, Frijns finished an excellent second as the track conditions began to optimise and the lap times tumbled.

Ultimately Mortaro held off both Frijns and Engel for the win, Farfus fourth and Mostert fifth.

Only 14 cars made the start of today’s race after a spectacular 13-car pile-up halted yesterday’s Qualifying Race. Mostert narrowly missed the carnage from his 19th on the grid, while though Engel was in front and avoided the carnage, his Mercedes suffered a battery fault and was unable to make the restart, but did race a lap down.

Mercedes claim the FIA GT World Cup in what was a chaotic weekend of GT racing.
