Pierre Gasly will miss the US Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, in favour of contesting the final round of the Super Formula Championship at Suzuka.

The Red Bull Junior driver currently sits second in the Japanese open wheel championship, just half a point behind leader Hiroaki Ishiura. With the title on the line, Gasly has elected to stay in Japan to attempt to claim the championship win before a possible move to F1 next year.

Toro Rosso will take this opportunity to trial another driver, alongside Daniil Kvyat, with Carlos Sainz headed to Renault, as it assesses it’s potential driver line up for 2018.

Rumours have suggested that Kiwi Porsche Factory WEC driver Brendon Hartley is in contention for the drive, along with Toyota rival Sebastien Buemi.

Both drivers are former Red Bull Junior development drivers, however a lack of current Red Bull Juniors eligible for Super Licenses, have seen Toro Rosso look further a field for potential drivers.

Buemi drove for Toro Rosso from 2009 to 2011 before taking up a role at Red Bull’s test driver. He also went on to claim the the World Endurance Championship title with Toyota in 2014 and the Formula E title for Renault in 2015/16. While Hartley was a Toro Rosso and Red Bull test driver from 2008 to 2010.
