Dalton nails first-ever Super2 Shootout

Lochie Dalton made a statement by taking the maiden Super2 Bathurst Shootout by a handsome margin.
Dalton’s #6 Tickford Mustang has been a cut above the rest all day over one lap and that remained the case in the pressure-packed one-lap dash.
Being the last out, he had a high bar to beat from title rival and Supercars wildcard teammate Rylan Gray, but the Tasmanian thrived.
Dalton’s 2:06.0063 smashed Gray’s time by more than two tenths, while Cameron McLeod made it a Mustang top three on fresh tyres.
The only Holden in the top five Jobe Stewart still made a big impression, giving it everything.
Goodall kicked things off after an aggressive out lap that started as early as the top of the mountain.
Had a clean lap, but pushed the limits and used all the kerbs to post the solid benchmark of 2:07.1118.
McLeod only driver to run all greens and the move paid off as he found three tenths on the first sector alone.
He carried on building speed down the mountain to lay down an imposing 2m06s lap, being a comfortable 0.727s clear of Goodall.
His old Super3 rival was up next, and Stewart had a few moments going down the mountain.
However, he still found a way to beat McLeod in the second sector.
Unfortunately, a whack with the wall at coming out of Forrest’s Elbow proved slightly costly as his fully-committed lap ended up 0.106s short, which left commentators stunned.
But the session was about to be elevated with the ultra-fast Tickford teammates up next.
Gray got on the throttle early, coming out of The Cutting and found an extra 0.067s on McLeod’s benchmark.
Kept it clean across the rest of the lap to emerge a tenth faster than McLeod.
With pole and potentially Supercars qualifying honours on the line, there was a lot to gain for Dalton.
The #6 Mustang looked settled in the first sector and went faster than all.
Dalton gave it everything across the top and it paid off, finding an extra two tenths.
This ended up being the margin as Dalton nailed his lap and took pole by that margin with a statement lap.
He will start the first Super2 race from 15.15 AEDT.
