Kostecki leads as ‘lost’ Feeney gets knocked out

Broc Feeney will have a mighty task to maintain his winning streak after he was knocked out in the opening segment of Race 20 Qualifying for the Townsville 500 opener, which claimed many victims.
Brodie Kostecki nailed a 1:12.7948 to top the session ahead of Bryce Fullwood and Chaz Mostert, but the stories surround those who missed the cut.
Across the 10-minute Q1, the game aimed to be one of the 10 fastest cars to stay in the fight for pole.
Sensationally Feeney was knocked out and will chase a sixth straight win from 14th on the grid.
The #88 looked safe after going to the top of the timesheets at the start of the final runs, but tumbled down the leaderboard.
He is not the slowest Triple Eight Camaro however, with Will Brown down in 20th.
The likes of Mostert, Waters, Wood, De Pasquale, Le Brocq, Randle, Davison and Payne managed to progress to Q2.
Outside of Feeney, rookie Kai Allen was a hard-luck story being just 0.03s short.
“Not sure, we have been top two all day and thought we rolled out strong,” Feeney admitted.
“But it didn’t really turn on for us and it didn’t feel a terrible lap. Didn’t have the grip we wanted
A bit lost because I thought we were in the fight for pole.”
Feeney set a purple second sector, but he was just edged out by a pair of fast Fords.
It was rookie Allen, who hit the lead early with a 1:13.3627 was enough to edge Randle and Feeney as 0.08s covered the top three.
That gap soon grew as Le Brocq lowered the benchmark to a 1:13.1648.
He enjoyed a tenth on the field after the opening stint, with Randle usurping Allen for second.
Both Fullwood and Murray also showed some speed, while Waters found himself on the bubble in 10th.
The likes of Brown and Wood needed big gains sitting a lowly 21st and 24th, respectively.
In the deciding final minute, Feeney hit the lead, but dropped to the bottom of the top 10.
Leading the charge was Kostecki as the times tumbled into the 1m12s window for the first time in the weekend.
Kostecki’s 1:12.7948 edged Fullwood and Mostert by 0.07s with many rocketing into the 10.
All of these changes dropped Feeney to as low as 15th and he could only improve one spot before the chequered flag.
Q2 and the fight for pole is about to begin.
