Hughes and Buckley lead Camaro charge

Hughes leads the way

By Thomas Miles

The Chevrolet Camaros dominated the TA2 Muscle Car Series as Jarrod Hughes picked up from where he left off and Alice Buckley shone on debut at Queensland Raceway.

Having missed the previous round at Sydney due to GT4, but maintained his championship lead, Hughes resumed his dominance by sweeping the two races on the opening day of 2 Days of Thunder.

The Chevrolet factory driver took pole with a 1:12.09s time that was four tenths clear of the rest of the field.

However, the most impressive drive was from Buckley as she qualified a stunning second in her very first session in the Camaro.

Following a new rolling start, Buckley dropped to fifth in her first rolling start in five years as Hughes took the control and was never seriously challenged despite a mid-race Safety Car.

Ben Gomersall fought hard to be second behind Hughes with Tom Davies joining them on the podium.

Buckley managed to snare fourth from Josh Thomas at Turn 3.

In the second sprint, Buckley again struggled in the rolling start and dropped to ninth.

After 16 laps of competitive pack racing, she could only get by Josh Webster and secured eighth, but it was still a solid finish to a strong day.

Hughes led the whole way, but always had Tom Davies close for company with just eight tenths covering them.

Gomersall led a sea of Mustangs to be third as all 23 cars finished.

Action resumes with two more races tomorrow.
