Scott Cameron Camaro back for Darwin

Scott Cameron

By Thomas Miles

After a nationwide effort, the Scott Cameron Camaro has been rebuilt by Whiteline Racing and is ready for action at Hidden Valley this weekend.

Cameron was one of three drivers involved in a heavy crash with Andrew Fisher and Jude Bargwanna at the previous Touring Car Masters round at Symmons Plains.

But when the category returns at this weekend’s Darwin Triple Crown, all three drivers will be back in the same cars after some massive rebuilds.

It has been all hands on deck at Whiteline Racing with the entire front end being replaced with parts sourced from all over Australia and beyond, with the help of social media to make it happen.

Although Cameron was not able to enjoy a shakedown, Whiteline Racing’s Bob Middleton was delighted to see the team’s biggest rebuild completed.

“It has been an enormous job. We had one about four years ago which was similar, but this is definitely the biggest one,” he told Auto Action.

“Everything forward from the front windscreen has been replaced and even the windscreen itself.

“The chassis and everything has not been used again. Its almost all brand new.

“We had stuff come from America, Newcastle, Sydney, Queensland and Melbourne, we have been just about everywhere getting pieces.

“It has all come together and looks brand new.

“We have not had time for a test, so the first test drive will be opening practice at Darwin when we get there, but it is great to get the car finished and race.”

The Darwin round was always going to be a special one for Whiteline Racing and Cameron as this was the scene of their first taste of TCM together last year.

The Camaro is now 50kg lighter and with the added experience, Cameron is hoping to bounce back well.

Whiteline Racing has not been able to solely focus on Cameron with teammate Joel Heinrich the runaway championship leader.

Heinrich has taken the two TCM rounds so far, but changes were made to ensure the yellow Camaro can remain the class of the field and score something the team has coveted so much.

“We have had to do a fair bit of work to Joel’s as well,” Middleton confirmed.

“He had to have the front mudguard, bumper bar, grill and some other bits changed after a bump in Tassie.

“Both cars have had repairs so we have been working overtime.

“Joel is doing a great job and we just need to keep chipping away. Every time he wins a race we lose 100 revs and we are running out of diff ratios.

“We will do the best we can and put it all together to make it work.”
