WA Street Track layout revealed

Perth Street Track

By Timothy Neal

The WA government has released the first glimpse of the layout for the new ‘multi-use’ Street Track in Perth, that will form part of a new sporting precinct at Burswood Park; likely to be used for the opening of the 2027 Supercars season.

It’s an election commitment that has had $217.5 million in funds already allocated for the upcoming State Budget.

The image released by the government shows a street track between the Crown Casino precinct and Optus Oval, with existing road areas such as Victoria Park and Campbell Drive incorporated into the design.

State Premier Roger Cook said that the street circuit is his delivery on the pre-election commitment, when the Labour Party won its third straight term in March.

“This precinct presents Western Australia with the opportunity to position Perth as one of the major event capitals of the south east Asian region,” Cook said.

“As part of this project, we will address a clear gap in Perth’s music venue infrastructure and deliver permanent facilities to attract the best local and overseas artists.

“In addition, the street circuit will put WA on the global motorsport map, delivering on my commitment at the State election.”

The only reference to any distinct motorsport event in the press release was that it will hold a ‘once-a-year marquee motorsport festival’.

Construction is set to begin this year, with Contractors invited to submit their interest in the design and delivery of the precinct.

And whilst there was no mention of it in today’s release, the WA government had also promised an additional $17.6 million to be committed to grassroots motorsport with upgrades and works for a range of racetracks, kart clubs, motorcross and speedways across the State.

This includes $10.75 million for Perth Motorplex in Kwinana towards a new Winged Outlaw Kart track, LED lighting and clubroom upgrades, as well as a new off-road vehicle area at the Motorplex to replace the current site in Medina.

The major package also includes a $1.3 million fund to deliver standalone medical facilities at Karting WA’s 13 tracks around the State.

Previously, Supercars CEO Shane Howard had said do the plan that:

“We at Supercars are absolutely thrilled at the prospect of racing on the streets of Perth, and applaud the work from the Western Australia Government thus far as this project has progressed.

“A street race at the Burswood Park precinct would instantly become a marquee event on the Supercars calendar and offer amazing on and off-track entertainment that truly has something for everyone.

“To hold an event in such a stunning and central location would brilliantly showcase the beautiful city of Perth both to racegoers and broadcast audiences around the world.

“This project has energised stakeholders and supporters from every corner of our Championship, and we look forward to working closely with the Western Australia Government to bring this event to reality.”
