Johnson dominates Tassie TCM opener

Johnson at TCM

By Thomas Miles

Steven Johnson has carried on his love affair with Tasmania, taking a 10th Touring Car Masters win at the circuit in crushing style.

Johnson led all 16 laps and cruised to a 1.7s triumph, his first since his health related break which kept him out of the back half of 2024.

The only car that was in the same postcode of the BRUT Mustang was Joel Heinrich’s Whiteline Camaro.

He was only 1.7s away at the end, while Ryan Hansford was in a distant third, 16s adrift.

Hansford held off Adam Garwood in the Capri, while Jude Bargwanna overcame Andrew Fisher in a race-long battle.

Johnson shot away from pole to leave Heinrich to slot in behind, while Hansford and Garwood went side by side for third.

This battle was not resolved until the back straight where the Torana outran the Capri.

Further back Buzadzic spun 180 degrees at the hairpin after being tagged by Tony Karanfilovski.

The fight for fifth between Fisher and Bargwanna almost ended in disaster.

Bargwanna was struggling to stop the DFH VB Commodore and locked up at the end of the back straight.

He ended up tagging the Jesus Torana at corner entry, but somehow both drivers impressively stayed on track.

A few laps later an instant replay almost took place at the hairpin, but this time Bargwanna avoided contact.

The battle carried on all the way to the end as with less than a minute left Bargwanna challenged Fisher on the outside multiple times.

But on the third occasion Bargwanna dived down the inside at Turn 6 and snatched a top five spot.

Up front there was no catching Johnson as the Hancock Racing Mustang pulled well over a second into the distance by posting record pace.

The only driver who could keep up was Heinrich as he was just 1.7s away with Hansford a distant third.

TCM goes racing again twice on Sunday at 8.30 and 13.40 on Sunday.
