Feeney goes bang bang

Feeney leads

By Thomas Miles

A super Saturday has propelled Broc Feeney into the Supercars championship lead thanks to back to back wins at Symmons Plains.

After winning the Tasmania Super440 opener, Feeney again dominated from pole and built Triple Eight’s imposing record at the track with a perfect Saturday.

In his 100th race, he took both wins and fastest laps on offer and with Will Brown only in 11th, the stole the Sprint Cup lead with just seven points covering the top three that also contains Cam Waters.

It was a tense battle of strategy with Feeney running the risk of taking four tyres, while his rivals aimed to gain ground by only changing two.

This created the fascinating scenario of a six-car train running nose to tail and for the second year in a row MSR surprised everyone with Percat emerging in the lead.

However, history would not repeat as Feeney eventually blazed past to a 2s triumph over Percat and Cam Waters.

Waters used the undercut to rise from eighth to third, while Macauley Jones held on to a maiden career top five.

It was a different story on the other side of the Triple Eight garage as Brown struggled to make ground and only managed 11th, while Chaz Mostert went backwards from 12th to 19th.

It was an even start, but there was no change at the front of the field with the top four all slotting into their respective grid slots with Feeney again in charge and built half a second on Randle, Golding and Jones.

At the back, Ryan Wood got tangled up with Aaron Cameron at the opening corner which resulted in the

Bryce Fullwood was fighting to stay in the top five,  but forced wide at Turn 6 and fell to 10th.

A couple of laps later on the same stretch of track, Murray and Stanaway clashed, which saw the PremiAir driver rotate across pit entry.

Unlike the opening race, it appeared Randle had more to fight with on the Soft tyre, but by Lap 10 Feeney opened a second.

His teammate Brown was struggling to make progress from 13th on the grid alongside Mostert.

The pair ended up releasing the frustrations on each other with Mostert nudging Brown out of the way at Turn 2.

Not only did this allow Mostert past, but also Cam Hill.

After 21 laps Feeney built a 1s lead and Randle was the first to blink and pit.

However, the three-lap overcut paid off for both Jones and Golding, who took two tyres to be released in front of the pair.

But leading all of them was Percat as MSR caught the leaders and commentators completely unawares for the second year in a row to steal the lead through strategy.

Suddenly Feeney went from first to third and had to fight on four fresh tyres.

Things got interesting when Feeney took multiple laps to muscle his way past Jones down the back straight at the halfway mark.

Percat now led a five car train and the three leaders all made nose to tail contact on Lap 27 after Randle locked up.

Despite history repeating, thankfully it was not full deja vu as Feeney somehow managed to stop himself from spinning.

There was about to be a new player in the intriguing fight for the lead in Waters.

The Monster Mustang waited until Lap 28 to box and rejoined side by side with Feeney for second.

But Waters struggled on cold tyres and dropped to seventh with Randle, Jones and Golding picking him off in consecutive corners.

This allowed the top two to break free and Feeney waited until the end of Lap 29 to make his move.

He made the crisscross stick coming out of Turn 6 and swooped down the inside of Percat at the final corner.

Feeney marched back into the lead, but it was not without contact.

Waters was the next to be on the move, demoting Jones out of the top four following a drag race down the back straight.

Next up was his teammate Randle, who offered little resistance and allowed the Monster Mustang to cruise to the podium.

Hill, Fullwood and De Pasquale were also putting on a show for the fans.

After the #4 escorted the #14 off at Turn 2, the MSR driver spun 180 degrees at Turn 6 after a clash with De Pasquale.

A similar clash occurred between Mostert and Murray with the WAU veteran forcing the Erebus rookie off at the exit of 6.

Up front there were no concerns with Feeney cruising to the chequered flag over Percat and Waters.

Jones held off Golding to get into the top five for the first time and complete a momentous day for BJR.

After Feeney’s perfect day, the field has lots of work to do on Sunday.
