McHugh goes back to back in Bordertown

McHugh on way to another win

By Thomas Miles

Lockie McHugh took his dominance to a new level and venue as he went back to back to deny Marcus Dumesny in the Brandt Sprintcar Speedweek on a special night in Bordertown.

A packed house welcomed sprintcars back to Bordertown at the impressively revamped Tolmer Speedway.

Despite Dumesny showing early pace and looking ominous, McHugh made good use of the American style banked bends to continue his perfect start to the Brandt Sprintcar Speedweek and snatch a 1s win.

Having backed up his opening night success with another A Main victory, the Australian champion enjoys a commanding 90-point lead as the show rolls on to Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway.

With the sprintcar world coming to the revamped Tolmer Speedway for the first time, a big crowd was on hand to witness the special occasion.

The Dash event in particular was stellar with Jamie Veal and McHugh trading monster slide jobs and the A-Main delivered a similar situation, while Keke Falland and Chase Randall won the C and B Mains respectively.

With the 35-lap main event being an all green affair and Corey McCullagh the only DNF, the 24-car field was able to put the foot down.

For much of the race, Dumesny appeared destined for victory.

Having won the Dash, Dumesny blasted away from pole and controlled the first 33 laps.

However, McHugh’s pace increased as the race went on having started from third and fell to as low as fifth before snatching second from Veal at the halfway mark.

Eventually McHugh’s pace was too good and he denied Dumesny victory inside the final three laps.

He ended up pulling a 1.231s margin of victory before the chequered flag as Dumesny and Veal rounded out the podium.

Much of the race was a slide job bonanza with Brock Hallett fourth and Rusty Hickman fifth.

Rounding out the top 10 were Grant Anderson, Jordan Rae, Glen Sutherland, Garet Williamson and Ryan Jones.

The third round of the Brandt Sprintcar Speedweek at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway kicks off with a Pit Party at 15.30 as gates open at 16.00 and cars hit the track at 17.30.
