Rwanda steps up F1 GP dream

By Thomas Miles

A return of Formula 1 to Africa for the first time since 1993 could be getting closer as Rwanda launched an official bid.

Rwanda has announced it has placed a bid to host a Grand Prix at a circuit designed by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz in Kigali.

The track is promised to be undulating despite being staged at Bugesera Airport.

Wurz raced for Benetton, McLaren and Williams across a 10-year period and is also designing the infamous Qiddiya circuit in Saudi Arabia.

The news comes after Rwanda hosted the annual post-season FIA prize-giving Gala event at the capital in Kigali.

Rwanda President Paul Kagame announced the news at the event.

“I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 grand prix,” he said.

“A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at F1 for the good progress in our discussions so far.

“I assure you we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is reported to have met Rwanda’s Sports Minister Richard Nyirishema at the Gala and spoke about the country’s “growing influence in motorsport.”

“To be here in Rwanda for such an important moment in the FIA’s calendar is a testament to the strength of this nation, in particular its growing influence in motorsport,” he said.

“We are aligned on our values and shared goals across key sectors such as innovation, sustainability, and road safety, and I look forward to our continued partnership.

“The future of motorsport in Africa is bright.”

The last Formula 1 Grand Prix held on the African continent was the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami dominated by Alain Prost in a Williams.
