Triple Eight confident of rebuild after Pye crash

Pye Triple eight bathurst crash 2024

By Thomas Miles

Triple Eight Race Engineering is adamant the #87 Camaro will be rebuilt before Practice 3 tomorrow morning after the  Scott Pye crash in The Cutting.

Pye brought Friday’s proceedings to an early end after he lost the rear under braking before careering into the outside wall at the tight left hander.

The crash came at the end of practice 2 where the sister #88 entry of Jamie Whincup finished on top of the table with Cooper Murray third, whilst Pye was 10th.

Whincup knows what it is like having infamously had a near similar accident 10 years ago in qualifying, which saw him start from the last row, but did not stop him from challenging for victory.

A decade on, the other entry that currently leads the championship via Will Brown ends Thursday in a similar position.

But the impact on the Great Race campaign itself will be minimal, being only practice with the car to be repaired overnight.

However, Whincup’s biggest concern is the confidence of Pye, who is in his first season co-driving since 2012.

“Unfortunately, the other car ended up in the fence, but hey, I’ve been in there a couple of times myself,” Whincup said.

“And if that happens, we’ll learn, we’ll fix it, and it’ll be brand new overnight and ready to go tomorrow.

“We will have a debrief tonight and tell him to keep his chin up. There is no stress at all.

“Hopefully it won’t hurt his confidence, which I am sure it won’t.”

“Practice 2 was going okay. We’re doing a race run, ticking the laps over and I don’t know, I just made a mistake through the Cutting,” Pye explains.

“I lost the rear and stuck in the fence. I think, we’ve got a little bit of work to do, just get me a bit more comfortable.

“But there’s not really much more I can add.

“It’s just a big night for the boys, unfortunately, so apologies to them.”
