Milestone weekend for Carrera Cup

Keeffe leads as McBride crashes Sandown 2023

By Thomas Miles

It will be a weekend to remember no matter what happens on track as the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia celebrates a special milestone at Sandown.

The one-make category will raise the bat for 150 championship rounds this weekend since its debut in 2003.

A 26-car field will be on hand to join the celebrations with Zak Best the big name addition, making his debit with the returning European giant EMA Motorsport.

EMA won every race it started last year thanks to Brit Harry King at Bathurst, while claimed the Bathurst 12 Hour with Matt Campbell.

The first Carrera Cup round in 2003.

It will be interesting to see how he stakes up against Harri Jones, who is on fire and enjoys a handy 145-point lead over Jackson Walls.

In Pro Am Adrian Flack is also in a strong position with 271 points up his sleeve over Matt Slavin.

Best will be one of two rookies this weekend alongside Matt Sumich.

It is appropriate the 150th round is at Melbourne given the previous milestone rounds have been held in Victoria.

The first ever round was at Phillip Island back in 2003 when Jim Richards was victorious, while another Kiwi in Craig Baird took the honours when the 50th round was held at the same circuit in 2008.

It was not until 2017 when the century was scored and it arrived a Albert Park where Cameron McConville drove to victory.

After 149 rounds the honours board reads Marc Cini with most round starts (131) Craig Baird with most round wins (21) and podiums (43) while McElrea Racing has the most amongst teams.
