Newey headed for Aston Martin

Newey

By Thomas Miles

The next chapter of the successful career of designing wizard Adrian Newey is expected to be announced at Aston Martin next week.

After 18 years and six constructors titles, Newey is leaving Red Bull at the end of 2024 and is tipped to lead the aerodynamic team at Lawrence Stroll’s British squad.

It will be the latest high profile signing for Aston Martin, which has attracted Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso to lead the team behind the wheel, while Andy Cowell will become CEO as Martin Whitmarsh departs.

Ferrari was rumoured to be the early favourite to land Newey’s coveted signature, but Autosport reports that Aston Martin has won the race.

It is believed Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur had budgeted to land the revered designer as a consultant based in the UK instead of Italy.

But Aston Martin made such a substantial offer that it is reported Ferrari backed out to avoid a bidding war with Aston Martin.

Stroll has been in regular contact with Newey, so much so the Canadian billionaire took the designer on a secret tour of the team’s new Silverstone HQ.

“Adrian and I have been not only talking for months, but actually for years,” Stroll told Bloomberg.

“Adrian is clearly the most talented and gifted figure in Formula 1, based on his track record and history, in addition to being a hell of a gentleman.

“So I’d be very excited for Adrian to join our team, as I think every other Formula 1 team on the grid would feel exactly the same.”

In addition to helping drive Red Bull from newbies to the dominant force it is today, Newey also won championships with Williams and McLaren in the 1990s.
