Hill keeps MSR on top

Matt Stone Racing remains the team to beat in Tasmania after Cameron Hill topped the Sunday morning warmup practice.

On a high from Nick Percat’s victory, the sister MSR entry Hill fired a 51.1730 to lead Practice 3.

But it was not by much with Broc Feeney, Andre Heimgartner and Bruce Fullwood all less than a tenth away.

Will Davison ensured there was a Ford in the top five as teams did a lot of trial and error as they prepared for bigger things to come.

Twenty of the 24 cars rolled out straight away under overcast skies as Heimgartner fired the first shot with a 52.5700.

But this was quickly knocked off by Anton De Pasquale, only for the #8 BJR Camaro to return fire and go back to the top again with a 51.5870, while Will Brown and rookie Aaron Love were not far away.

The two-tenth advantage soon became a minuscule 0.0048s as Cam Waters fell just short.

But on his next lap the Tickford driver was able to go all the way, only for both Hill and then Jack Le Brocq to go slightly faster.

With Percat, De Pasquale and Wood also showing pace, just 0.0624s covered the top six at the halfway mark.

Davison was the next driver to go on the attack and he lowered the benchmark to a 51.3504, which was swiftly beaten by Feeney.

Stanaway was the first to make a major mistake, going off at the end of the hairpin, while Mostert went even further off.

The WAU driver got out of shape over the mound and found the gravel on both sides of the track.

With less than 2min left Hill had the final say and nailed a 51.173 to go just clear of Feeney.

BJR teammates Heimgartner and Fullwood also fired late laps to claw into the top four.

Tim Slade was last with his #23 PremiAir Camaro suffering an engine issue.

The intensity will lift when the three-part knockout qualifying returns.
