Reynolds’ theory behind track-to-track form swings

Reynolds

By Thomas Miles

A theme of 2024 has been the significant track-to-track form swings between Chevrolet and Ford and David Reynolds has a theory.

The 2024 Supercars season is into its eighth round and not one has seen both taste victory on the same weekend.

The Camaros got a fast start dominating the Bathurst 500, Australian Grand Prix and Taupo events before Ford hit back at Wanneroo.

Broc Feeney’s Darwin dominance has proven to be a flash in the pan as Ford made a stand and raised its hand at Townsville and Sydney Motorsport Park.

Just one practice session into the Tasmania SuperSprint and it already feels like Camaro territory with Cameron Waters the leading Mustang down in 10th.

The driver who topped the session for Team 18, Reynolds, believes it is down to the Mustang’s slightly greater amount of aero, which produced more drag down the two long straights at Symmons Plains.

“I knew coming here it was going to favour the Camaro,” Reynolds said.

“My theory is the Ford might have a bit more aero and drag, so then at aero dominated tracks like last round they go well but this is a slippery track and suits us.

“Our category we try to make everything the same but I don’t think that is ever possible.

“You can’t make two engines or two shapes the same.

“When everything else is the same it is going to highlight the differences, which is why we see one camp happy at one track or another.

“But this is only practice and we don’t know who is running what tyres. We will find out on Sunday.”
