Winterbottom wary of ‘tough’ milestone weekend

Winterbottom

By Thomas Miles

Mark Winterbottom is on track to create more history at Symmons Plains this weekend, but knows it will be “challenging.”

If Winterbottom starts both 55-lap races in the Tasmania SuperSprint, he will become the first ever driver to start 600 straight ATCC/Supercars Championship races.

His currently unbroken 598-race streak started back in 2005 at the Darwin Triple Crown, with his only missed start taking place at the previous round in Shanghai.

The one and only Chinese round was where Winterbottom infamously ran over a loose grate, which tore apart the floor of his Larkham Motorsport Falcon.

It arrives at a circuit where Winterbottom has just one win from 49 starts arriving back in 2010, but “Frosty” has stood on the Tasmanian podium on 11 occasions.

The highlight of recent times was taking a surprise pole in his third round for Team 18 in 2019.

Mark Winterbottom will race with new colours this weekend.

Winterbottom is ready for the challenges of Symmons Plains to be thrown at him.

“It is a round that I find very challenging, but has been very rewarding,” he said.

“One of the great memories for Team 18 was that first pole position that we got with Charlie and the team in 2019, so it does have great memories but I do know it’s going to be a tough weekend.

“Qualifying is key, five corners, every corner means so much, you’ve got those two long drag strips, and then you’ve got to go in the race and make the tyres last for such a long time.

“It’s going to be a tough weekend, but we’re going there with max attack. We need to get some good results.”
