Somers bounces back from terrifying crash

Conor Somers has bounced back from his terrifying Townsville crash and will return to the Porsche Sprint Challenge at Tasmania this weekend.

Somers missed the recent Queensland Raceway round with his Sonic Motor Racing Services Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (991 GEN II) being rebuilt since its Townsville tumble.

In qualifying at the Supercars street circuit Somers fired into the catch fence at the fast Turn 10 at 90 degrees.

Since then the Sonic Motor Racing Services team has been hard at work repairing the car with the rebuild requiring a complete re-shell with around 90 percent of car components being replaced.

Despite racing in an orange and black machine in the past, Somers will race with a clean-skinned all white livery following the hasty rebuild.

Somers said it has been a very busy process to be back on track.

“It took a lot of work to get the car ready, but it’s back, on the way to Tasmania, and I can’t wait to get back in it,” said Somers.

“Alongside the team, I have worked on the car basically every day since it got back from Townsville to get it ready.

“It was a huge effort by the team to get it back, so I can’t thank the team at Sonic along with the generous support of many friends and supporters for helping me get back on track.

“I raced at Symmons Plains in Formula Ford last year. This will be a totally different experience, but at least I know what way the track goes.”

The Porsche Sprint Challenge joins Supercars at the Tasmania SuperSprint this weekend.
