Piastri to ‘create my own’ celebrating legacy

Piastri

By Thomas Miles

Oscar Piastri put Australia back on the top step of a Formula 1 podium, but some wondered why he did not perform a “Shoey”.

Ever since the 2016 German Grand Prix, fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo has started his own tradition of performing the “Shoey” each time he appears on the podium.

Despite some believing he should follow in the footsteps of Ricciardo, Piastri elected to do his own thing, getting soaked in champagne, but making sure the trophy is protected.

When quizzed about why he did not perform the “Shoey” Piastri was respectful, acknowledging that was Ricciardo’s “legacy” and the McLaren youngster as some thinking to work out what will be his.

“The shoey is Danny Ric’s thing,” Piastri said.

“I’m going to get roped into it because I’m an Aussie, but I don’t know. I’ll try and think of something new.

“I know we did one at Silverstone last week, but I think we were a bit upset after the race there, so we needed some cheering up.

“But no, I’ll leave that to Danny Ric and that can be his legacy. I’ll create my own.”

However, that celebrating legacy may involve the “Maccas run” and Monopoly.

“We had a flight from Budapest that was significantly delayed (so) in our wait for the delay we got a cheeky Maccas run. I had a Big Mac,” Piastri said.

“We were playing Monopoly on the way back on the plane. We were all good apart from Alex Albon teaching us a thing or two about Monopoly.

“I got home at 5.00 and that was the celebrations. It was not the most glamorous of afterparties. let’s say.”
