Young Aussies scoop up wins and podiums in Europe

By Timothy Neal

It was a big weekend for a cohort of young Aussies in Europe with Alex Ninovic and James Wharton taking wins in the Netherlands and Italy, whilst Jack Beeton and Patrick Heuzenroeder also made deserved trips to the podium.

For Ninovic, the Rodin F4 youngster further cemented second in the championship in the British F4’s rain sodden intercontinental round at Zandvoort by taking P2 in the opener to extend his podium streak to eight races, before he broke through for his third win of the season in Race 2.

With British driver and pointscore leader Deagen Fairclough taking two wins and a podium, Ninovic lost touch slightly to be 66 points in arrears, but holds a good buffer to third place with four rounds and 12 races remaining.

At Mugello, Italy, James Wharton broke through for his first win of the year in the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, the Prema driver took his win in Race 2 to climb into fourth place on the pointscore.

Fresh from making his FIA Formula 3 debut at Silverstone where he made several impressive charges through the field from the rear of the grid, Wharton stormed into the lead before the first corner, then held off Italian Brando Badoer by just under a second.

In the Italian F4, Jack Beeton continues to collect F4 podiums in his second full-time year in the machinery, this time taking a pair of deuces, also at Mugello.

The 2023 South East Asia F4 Champion has finished in second spot in four of the last seven races across Italy, and is inching closer to a maiden win in the series, with the US Racing team youngster set to prepare for back-to-back intercontinental rounds in France and Spain.

Beeton sits fifth in the championship, and is in a good position to perhaps climb as high as third if he can keep racking up the strong rounds.

Lastly, after making continued improvements across the season, Heuzenroeder finally broke through for a maiden series podium in the GB3 Championship in Zandvoort.

Racing for JHR Developments, Heuzenroeder has spent the last few rounds largely entrenched in the top-ten, with his well earned podium coming in Race 3.

Next up for the aforementioned drivers, Ninovic returns to Britain for the Scottish round of the UK championship on August 10-11.

Wharton will head to Circuit Paul Ricard in France on July 20-21 where Beeton will also feature in the Italian F4 series on the same weekend, whilst Heuzenroeder will contend three races at Silverstone on July 27-28 in the GB3.
