Dunlop Series qualifying tweaked

By Thomas Miles

The Dunlop Series qualifying format has been tweaked for the Townsville 500, being squeezed into one session.

For the first two rounds at Bathurst and Wanneroo, the field has been split across two groups with the slowest half of the field from practice rolling out first before the faster half chase for pole.

Previously it was a simple split between Super2 and Super3 competitors, but with only three cars competing in the latter, it had to be changed for 2024.

Ahead of round 3, the sensible decision has been made to put all 25 Dunlop Series cars together in the solitary 20-minute session.

With the field previously split across two separate sessions, qualifying did tend to drag out across half an hour and due to evolving track conditions it was not an even playing field.

But now with the sole all cars will enjoy the same conditions and the fight for pole will be a much more shorter, sharper and more exciting spectacle for pole.

The two Dunlop Series qualifying sessions will take place from 9.40 and 9.30 AEST on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Both races retain the timed 40-minute format.

For Townsville the field will expand from 25 to 26 cars thanks to the addition of Jack Perkins, while Dean Fiore will substitute for the absent Jett Johnson.

Kai Allen currently leads the championship by 60 points over Aaron Cameron and Zach Bates.
