Diffey IndyCar future uncertain

Leigh Diffey

By Thomas Miles

Australia’s American star behind the microphone, Leigh Diffey, may soon call his final IndyCar races due to the TV rights change.

Recently IndyCar announced Fox Sports will take over from NBC as the new exclusive media rights partner in the USA.

NBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of the series for the last six years, while its association started in 2009.

Since last calling Supercars on Channel 10 in 2006, Diffey has become one of the leading callers for American giant NBC.

He joined the network at the end of 2012 and has been its voice of IndyCar since 2013.

But with IndyCar switching to Fox next year, Diffey’s days calling the likes of Will Power and Scott McLaughlin could be coming to an end with the Australian expected to remain at NBC.

Fox Sports is yet to reveal its IndyCar TV line-up, but a report from the INDYSTAR suggested the network’s current motorsport callers such as Adam Alexander or Jamie Little could be the lead callers, plus Allen Bestwick or Kevin Lee.

Diffey is not going to call this weekend’s IndyCar race at Laguna Seca due to commitments covering the US Track and Field trials.

He is also expected to miss the Toronto street race as it clashes with the Paris Olympic Games.

This is no surprise considering the Aussie has called both the Rio and Tokyo Olympics in 2016 and 2021 respectively, including the coveted men’s and women’s 100m sprint finals at the latter.

In addition to the new Fox Sports deal, the 2025 IndyCar calendar was announced and is below.

For Australian viewers, this weekend’s race at Laguna Seca, plus the remainder of the season will be broadcast on Stan Sport.
