Van Gisbergen crashes in Iowa

After special back to back NASCAR Xfinity Series wins, Shane van Gisbergen suffered a character building weekend at Iowa.
As NASCAR returned to the ovals at Iowa Speedway, van Gisbergen had a tough time, crashing out in Stage 2.
It was his second incident of the weekend having also hit the wall in practice which forced Kaulig Racing to run a white backup #97 Camaro.
It was a case of what could have been for van Gisbergen, who would have started second alongside Austin Hill after qualifying was washed out, but the Kiwi was forced to start from the rear due to the practice incident.
After starting from the rear of the 38-car field van Gisbergen climbed six positions to be 32nd before being lapped on Lap 19.
After staying out at the end of the opening stage, SVG sat in 25th until he crashed out.
The Kiwi got out of shape on the bottom of Turn 2 and as he tried to catch it he took out Blane Perkins in the process.
“I just got loose and had a guy on top of me,” van Gisbergen said on the NBC broadcast.
“We just stayed out to get back on the lead lap. I was getting more and more confidence, and just got loose and tried to sort of spin in the middle and someone collected me.
“So, it’s my fault again. I am gutted for the Kaulig Racing guys to have two cars ruined there.
“It’s the first time I’ve crashed out of a race, really.
“But, I learned a lot all weekend. We actually had some speed yesterday, which was cool.
“The car was a little bit difficult, so we will try again next week.”
Sam Mayer snuck ahead of Riley Herbst in a thrilling overtime finish.
Next weekend the NASCAR Xfinity Series heads to New Hampshire for the Ambetter Health 200 at 5.00 AEST Sunday, June 23.
