Big Sedans race coming to Victoria

By Auto Action

The Alexandra and District Speedway Club’s annual ‘100 Lap Derby’ for speedway sedans will produce one of the highlights of the year this weekend.

The Saturday-Sunday meeting has attracted a stellar line up from the best in Victoria to even a couple of Americans keen to be the first ever from the USA to win the big race with a history that spans decades in Alexandra.

From Trevor Peters in 1975 to Damien Miller in 2023, the event known as the ‘Bathurst of Speedway’ has seen many of the greats compete.

Nev Eltze from Horsham is on top of the list having won the event eight times, while only one driver from outside of Victoria has won it being Tasmanian Maurice Jones in 1984.

This year’s event has attracted 90-plus entrants to do battle in the big race with David Donegan a frequent visitor to the United States to compete in similar endurance events, along with fellow Americans Billy Meazell III and Wally Beaty.

They are an unknown as far as this event is concerned however with plenty of experience running much longer endurance events in the USA on short dirt tracks, they will be ones to watch.

Last year’s winner Damien Miller leads many drivers that could win which also includes brother Brendan.

Add in Tony Moule a former national Sprintcar champion and winner of this event, Dylan Barrow, four-time event champion Lennie Bonnici, Darren Forrest, Victorian Sports Sedan champion Jamie Lock, Shane O’Brien, local Luke Fallon and many more.

In support action the Standard Saloons annual ‘Kings Birthday’ Cup weekend feature event will be held with a strong list of entrants that includes Brodie Ardley, Mitch Blencowe, Matt Leek, Andrew Miles, Brad Hill, Rhys Lansdown a former Victorian champion and Wayne Sheerman.

Junior Sedan competitors in the Victorian Speedway Council 1200cc Sedans will also compete on Sunday only with star drivers including Andrew Mitchell, Blake Beach, Riley Taylor, Chase Doherty, Brad Marshall, Xander Baxter, and Will Fallon.

For the kids there is the annual ‘One Lap Derby’ Bike race around the Speedway track plus for some extra entertainment this season there is a handbag race, where some dainty looking lads will strive to be the first across the line with their handbag.

There are music acts across the weekend on stage and an overall great camping atmosphere with pit fires, and the usual trek campsite to campsite to chat with friends and competition.

Racing begins on Saturday from 1pm on Gordon Street Alexandra with a planned 9:30pm finish and again on Sunday from the same start time.

Entrance will cost for two days is $150- for a family of two adults and 3 children between the ages of 10-16 with all children under 10 free. Adults on their own is $60, Invalid, and aged pensioners are $30 and children not entering on a family ticket is also $30. For one day of racing only, halve the price for any of the tickets required.

Shane van Gisbergen won his first Xfinity Series race on the weekend in Portland, a week before Cam Waters and Will Brown join him as Cup Series drivers. The NASCAR racing was typically entertaining too.
