Lancia to make rallying comeback

By Thomas Miles

One of the most famous and successful WRC constructors, Lancia, will make a rallying return with the Ypsilon.

Lancia has revealed plans to make a Rally4 version of its latest Ypsilon HF hatchback road car.

When the Lancia Ypsilon HF Rally4 does compete in its first stage remains unclear, while the road car will go on sale in Europe from May 2025.

The Rally4 car will will be powered by 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, developing 212 horsepower.

Despite not competing in the FIA World Rally Championship since 1992, the Italian brand’s impact on the pinnacle of the sport remains significant as it still holds more manufactures titles with 10 than any other with Citroen (8) and Toyota (7) the closest.

Due to many still holding special memories of the Lancia Stratos and Delta, the sight of the Italian brand rallying again will be celebrated despite being at Rally4 level.

A Lancia statement expressed the significance of the brand’s rallying heritage.

“From today, the hearts of many fans and rally enthusiasts will beat again,” it read..

“In fact, Lancia has decided to return to the world of Rallying, starting from the basics of competition, from Rally 4, the beating heart of Rally.

“A category that represents pure passion, with young drivers as protagonists who begin their careers with passion to become the professionals of tomorrow.

“A new beginning in perfect Lancia style, characterised by ambition, pragmatism and humility, in line with the brand’s mission and DNA.

“Lancia is still the most successful brand of all time in the world of rallying, with 15 World Rally Championships, three Constructors’ World Endurance Championships, a 1000 Miglia, two Targa Florio and a Carrera Panamericana.

“The Lancia Ypsilon Rally 4 HF is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder four-valve-per-cylinder engine that develops 212hp.

“Equipped with front-wheel drive with 5-speed mechanical transmission and mechanical limited-slip differential, the high-performance model is the ideal solution for the enjoyment of all rally enthusiasts, but also a serious candidate for drivers who aspire to victory in the R4 category and in the two-wheel drive championships.”
