Gibbs takes Coca-Cola 600 pole, SVG battles

By Thomas Miles

Ty Gibbs will start the 2024 Coca-Cola 600 from pole position, whilst Shane van Gisbergen battled in NASCAR Cup Series qualifying.

Just hours after finishing an intense Xfinity Series race, van Gisbergen switched from the #97 to #16 Kaulig Racing Camaro.

The Kiwi was unable to find his best in the tough one-lap qualifying and could only manage the 36th fastest time, his lowest Cup Series effort.

Van Gisbergen’s 30.473s time was 1.118s slower than Gibbs’ pole time.

Only BJ McLeod, Ty Dillon, Chris Buscher and JJ Yeley will start the big race behind van Gisbergen.

Gibbs became the second youngest Coca-Cola 600 pole winner at 21 years old, just a month away from Will Byron when he was 21 in 2019.

Interestingly Byron was the driver Gibbs overcame but just 0.06s to the pole, while Christopher Bell, Martin Truex Jr and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five.

The 2024 Coca-Cola 600 begins at 8.00 AEST.
