Waters recalls heated NASCAR episode

By Thomas Miles

Cameron Waters believes Layne Riggs was frustrated by being “slow all night” after the pair clashed in the aftermath of the NASCAR Truck Series race in Kansas.

In just his second NASCAR Truck Series race, Waters has already had his first off-track moment.

Having finished a strong 19th, the Supercars driver racing for ThorSport was confronted by Riggs post race.

The pair had made contact when running side by side on the final lap in a battle won by the American, who finished a whisper ahead of the Aussie.

A viral video posted by Fox Sports shows the drivers involved in a heated verbal argument after getting out of their cars.

Waters revealed he had actually approached Riggs to ‘say cool race’ only for the conversation to become much more colourful.

“I think he was just upset with the last corner,” Waters told FRONTSTRECH.

“We got in there side by side but I got a bit free and got into him.

“He was probably a bit shitty. He didn’t have the best race and was slow all night. It is what it is.

“I had a lot of fun tonight and was going up to him to say cool race.”

In terms of the weekend as a whole, Waters was a consistent figure.

After a wreck ended his Martinsville debut, the #66 ThorSport Racing Ford finished practice 22nd, qualified 20th before rising from 25th to 19th in the closing stages in Kansas.

To put Waters’ result into perspective, it took Marcos Ambrose eight starts to record his first top 20 NASCAR Truck Series result in his debut season back in 2006.

Waters said it was not until the final stint that he felt at home in the #66.

“It was up and down and up and down. It was pretty wild,” he said about the race.

“I just struggled at the restarts and was in a pack with dirty air.

“Towards the end I felt comfortable and got the truck a little bit closer to what I liked.

“It was really good at the end of the run so I just wished we had a caution or another 100 laps to run.”

Waters will return to Australia to prepare for the Perth SuperSprint on May 17-19.
