Van Gisbergen battles at the ‘Monster Mile’

By Thomas Miles

Shane van Gisbergen struggled to overcome the “Monster Mile” for the first time and faces another comeback drive in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Van Gisbergen will start the A-Game 200 from down in 31st position after struggling to maximise his #97 Kaulig Racing Camaro in the brutal one-lap qualifying system.

His time was 23.773s, eight tenths off the pole time of 22.950 set by Brendan Jones.

Unlike in previous rounds the Kiwi enjoyed a practice session to get a feel for Dover Motor Speedway.

He finished that session 26th after recording a 24.103s time.

Overall it was a tough day for Kaulig Racing with Van Gisbergen actually the second highest in the four-car stable with only AJ Allmendinger inside the top 30, starting 10th.

Van Gisbergen can turn to his recent race at Texas for inspiration where he also started outside the top 30, but raced his way up to 18th.

The Kiwi will be looking to produce a similar performance to continue his consistent rookie season where he has finished inside the top 30 in eight of the nine races so far.

Jones edged out Riley Herbst to pole by a meagre 0.012s, while Justin Allgaier was the only other car in the 22s window.

The A-Game 200 will begin at 3.30 AEST tomorrow morning and will be broadcast on Fox Sports.

We’re back from our weekend in Taupo (Tow Paw), and what an unbelievable first weekend for that venue. It was, we felt, the start of this season, too, despite it being the third round. Andrew and Bruce were there, and PG was on the couch.

Brodie Kostecki was back for Erebus, Andre Heimgartner won for Brad Jones Racing, and Will Brown battled his teammate Broc Feeney for the other win. Anton De Pasquale also won the Jason Richards Trophy for the best performer over the two races – is Dick Johnson Racing back?
